Basic Candle Making Supplies You Need

The most important candle supply you need is wax. It provides the fuel for the flame and determines how long the candle will burn. Candle supply companies sell different types of wax, and each has unique characteristics.

Paraffin Wax. This is a petroleum by-product created when crude oil is refined into gasoline. It’s the most common type of candle wax. Paraffin wax is affordable, easy to work with and holds fragrance well. However, it’s not a renewable resource and produces more soot than natural waxes.
Soy Wax. Made from the oil of soybeans, this is a renewable and biodegradable resource. Soy wax burns cleaner and longer than paraffin. It has a lower melting point, which means it doesn’t get as hot as paraffin candles. It’s excellent for container candles and for blending with other waxes.
Beeswax. Beeswax is a natural product produced by honey bees. It burns longer and cleaner than paraffin and soy wax. Beeswax has a natural sweet scent and does not require additional fragrance. However, it’s more expensive than other types of wax.
Palm Wax. Palm wax is made from palm oil and is known for its hard consistency and high melting point. It’s often used for pillar candles. However, sourcing can be an issue due to the environmental impact of palm oil plantations.
Coconut Wax. Coconut wax is made from the oil of coconuts. It’s a soft wax that burns slowly and throws a scent extremely well. It’s often blended with other waxes to increase their firmness and improve burn time.
Rapeseed Wax. Rapeseed wax is made from rapeseed oil. It’s a good alternative to soy wax, offering similar benefits such as clean burning and excellent fragrance retention. However, it can be harder to find than other types of wax.
Blended Waxes. These are combinations of different types of waxes designed to optimize certain characteristics such as melt point, fragrance throw or the look of the candle.

Wicks are responsible for carrying the flame and keeping it burning steadily. Choosing the right wick is crucial to ensure that your candle burns evenly and efficiently.

Wicks also come in different sizes (S, M, L) and materials, such as:

Cotton Wicks. Cotton is a common material used for wicks. It’s sometimes braided and can be used with or without a core. Certain cotton wicks have a paper filament throughout for increased rigidity.
Paper Wicks. These are typically made from specially treated paper and often combined with cotton. The combination of cotton and paper in the wick is perfect for candles with high fragrance loads.
Wooden Wicks. These provide a unique aesthetic and a pleasant, crackling sound. They’re often used in container candles and need to be paired with the right wax to ensure proper burning.
Zinc or Tin Core Wicks. These are cotton wicks with a thin wire core made of zinc or tin. The metal core provides rigidity, keeping the wick upright when the wax turns into a liquid. They’re commonly found in jar candles, pillars, votives and devotional lights.

Adding fragrance oils to your candles can enhance their appearance and create a unique ambiance in any space. Fragrance oils come in a variety of scents, from floral and fruity to earthy and spicy. They’re specially formulated for use in scented candles and can be combined to create your own custom scent.

Fragrance oils are typically added during the candle making process when the wax is at its optimal temperature. It’s important to follow the recommended usage rates for each fragrance oil, as using too much can affect the candle’s burn time and fragrance throw.

Colorants/Candle Dye

While candles can be left in their natural color, adding colorants can create a more visually appealing product. Colorants come in various forms, such as liquid dyes, powdered pigments and wax chips. They’re specially formulated for use in candles and can be mixed to create custom colors.

It’s important to note that certain types of wax may require more or less colorant. It’s best to do a small test batch before adding colorants to your entire candle batch.

Containers/Candle Jars

Container supplies for candles are also essential when making candles. In fact, they have become increasingly popular due to their ease of use and safety compared to traditional pillar candles. Containers come in various shapes and sizes, from jars and tins to tea cups and mugs. They can also be reused for other purposes after the candle has burned down.

When choosing containers, consider factors such as heat resistance, transparency (for displaying colorants) and whether they can withstand multiple uses. Some popular options include:

Glass jars with lids
Metal tins
Ceramic vessels

Having the right tools can make a big difference in your candle making process. Some essential tools include:

Double Boiler or Wax Melter: Used to melt wax without direct heat, preventing it from burning or becoming too hot.
Thermometer: Helps ensure the wax is heated to the correct temperature for adding fragrance oils and colorants.
Pouring Pitcher: A container with a spout for pouring wax into containers without causing a mess.
Wick Centering Device: Keeps the wick centered in the container to prevent tunneling and uneven burning.

Molds are used for making pillar or shaped candles. They come in various materials, such as silicone, metal and plastic. Silicone molds are popular because they’re flexible and they make it easy to remove the candle once it has hardened.
