When should you seek medical advice?
While most sleep problems can be sorted out by making changes to your lifestyle, such as adopting a relaxing routine in the evening or avoiding alcohol before bedtime, it's worth speaking to your GP about certain issues. • If your sleeplessness is long-term, causing you to feel constantly tired or putting you in a low mood. • If anxious thoughts prevent you getting to sleep, or stop you getting back to sleep if you wake in the early hours. • If your partner often reports that you're snoring or even momentarily stopping breathing, and you wake up feeling tired. (These are signs of sleep apnoea, which is more common if you have a high body mass index.) • Menopausal women can see their GP about managing the symptoms of the…
FIND A SLEEP PATTERN TO MATCH YOUR AGE
From naps to big blocks of sleep, the way we snooze changes with age. But how do we know what's normal? Should an infant be sleeping through the night? Is waking before sunrise a problem? Can you sleep for eight hours but still feel tired the next day? These are just a few concerns regarding our sleeping habits. With the help of author and sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley we look at the sleep patterns for each age to assess what counts as ‘normal’ when we hit the hay. “You may blame hormones for why your teenager is moody, but it's more likely they're sleep deprived.“ Years 0-10: A vital stage of sleep for healthy development Sleep at this stage in life is crucial, as our brains and bodies are…
“In crisis or despair, walking has a way of untangling the mess, until you have neat strands to reshape however you choose”
When we are faced with challenges in life, we're often advised to take things one step at a time, which, in the thick of something, can feel like hollow advice, but for Raynor Winn and her husband Moth – when they found themselves homeless, broke and, in Moth's case, unwell – their only hope became a step by step process that led them to walk the 630-mile South West Coast Path. Some 11 years, and many miles on foot later, such undertakings continue as a cornerstone in her approach to life. “Walking long distance is like a meditation,” says Raynor. “All that jangled thought at the front of your brain starts to dissipate and slip to the side. Facing both physical and mental barriers on a long walk allows the…
LORDS OF THE RINGS
Smart rings are here and these screen-less pieces of tech are taking many of the features packed inside of a smartwatch and placing them inside a more discreet and elegant form factor. This connected jewellery can track your movements, keep a close eye on your heart and know when you’ve jumped into bed. It then wants to take that data to offer guidance and help you make better decisions about whether a double gym day is a smart move - or you whether you need to rest. For a while, the number of smart rings you could put on your finger were small, but now you’ve got options. We’ve tested them all to give you our take on the best smart rings that are worthy of a spot on your…
HOW TO GET INTO OPEN-WATER SWIMMING (and why you should)
Love them or loathe them, most of us will do our swim sessions in the pool. It’s warm, convenient and there’s a nice hot shower waiting afterwards… So why take your swimming outdoors? Well, there are plenty of reasons and some of them may surprise you. First up, it’s a challenge. Swimming outdoors takes away the mindlessness and lane ropes, the handy breather every 25 or 50 metres and forces you to work on your endurance and technique. It’s also more physically challenging due to the cooler water. Here in the UK open water rarely reaches swimming pool temperatures, which means your body has to respond and adapt to keep your core warm. Also, immersing yourself in colder water for just a few minutes gets the endorphins firing and makes…
Pranayam BREATHE AWAY Ageing
Breath as an indicator of your state of Health If you trace a person from being an infant to a full grown adult, you will notice, in most cases, a progressive decline in the skin texture and complexion. A baby is glowing pink whereas most adults, even in their prime youth, are plagued with a diseased skin and dull complexion. This is because, in the process of growing up, one is exposed to certain unnatural practices and stimuli from which it was kept protected in the womb. Take for example, the simple act of breathing. If you observe a baby breathing, you would notice a pronounced abdominal movement. The stomach inflates as it breathes in and deflates as it breathes out. If you observe your own breathing patterns, most likely,…
‘Two dolls’: Can Trump sell Americans on austerity?
There may not be much under the tree for America’s children this Christmas, said Chris Cillizza in his Substack newsletter, but “Donald Trump just handed Democrats a huge gift.” In last week’s televised Cabinet meeting, the president shrugged off concerns that his trade war with China could lead to higher prices and empty shelves. “Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, you know?” he told reporters. “And maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more.” Not since Dr. Seuss’ Grinch has a strangely hued public figure been so upbeat about the prospect of children going without toys. And with millions of average Americans “already struggling to meet their basic needs,” it would be “campaign malpractice” for Democrats not to run this “out-of-touch”…
Attacking Activists
On March 25, Alfredo Juarez was driving his compañera to work in the flower fields owned by Washington Bulb, the largest tulip grower in the United States. In the early morning, Lelo, as he is known, saw flashing lights in his rearview mirror and pulled over. An ICE agent approached the car. When Lelo reached into his pocket for his ID, the agent smashed the window and dragged him out of the car, as his partner demanded to know why he was being brutalized. Lelo was taken to a nearby detention center and then transferred to a large migrant prison in Tacoma run by the GEO Group. A few days later, as Lelo was about to board a deportation flight to Sonora, Mexico, he was removed from the line and…
BE YOUR OWN CONSUMER WATCHDOG
SINCE his return to the White House, President Trump has launched an aggressive campaign to cut government costs and streamline operations. In the process, he’s revamping federal agencies that handle everything from tax returns and Social Security payments to consumer financial protections. Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has instituted hiring freezes, mass layoffs and reorganizations at agencies such as the IRS, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Social Security Administration. In addition, the president dismissed several Democratic agency commissioners and signed an executive order requiring government agencies to identify 10 existing rules, regulations or guidance documents to be repealed for every new one issued. Supporters applaud the push for reduced bureaucracy. Critics are concerned about weakened consumer protections and DOGE’s potential access to sensitive consumer data, such as…
The WellBeing Guide to Treating Anxiety
People often use the terms “stress” and “anxiety” interchangeably but they actually mean different things. Stress is the body’s natural and protective response to a potential danger. It puts the body into a heightened state of awareness to keep it out of harm’s way. Unfortunately, stress is difficult to avoid these days; we all lead hectic lives and stress has become a part of everyday life. The most common sources of stress for most people are work-related: huge workloads and balancing long work hours with the wants and needs of family life, not to mention the burdens of health, relationship problems and money-related matters. Stress is not necessarily always a bad thing, though. In small doses, it can actually be a good thing, helping you to perform well under pressure…
Are LITTLE WHITE LIES ever OK?
When was the last time you told a lie? Maybe not a huge ‘pants-on-fire’ untruth, but a small, ‘harmless’ fib that slipped off the tongue and went unnoticed. Having a father who was a policeman and spending years of my childhood going to church, I quickly learnt that lies can have big consequences they’re often not worth. Lying is bad – so bad that it’s in The 10 Commandments – so it’s never been something I’m willing to risk. Unless, that is, I’m telling my husband that the ‘bargain’ trousers I bagged in the shop were a few pounds less than they actually were, making them more of a steal. Or adding on a tenner when I tell friends about the ‘extortionate’ meal we had at the new pizza place…
